10 visual health myths

10 MITOS SOBRE LA VISIÓN

LOS 10 MITOS Y FALSAS CREENCIAS: MIOPÍA, HIPERMETROPÍA Y ASTIGMATISMO.

10 MYTHS ABOUT VISION

THE 10 MYTHS AND FALSE BELIEFS: MYOPIA, HYPERMETROPIA AND ASTIGMATISM.

1. The use of the computer produces eyestrain:

Many of us believe that working in front of a computer can lead to visual problems. Such as visual fatigue, eyestrain, dry eyes or even computer vision syndrome. However, computer use is unlikely to cause damage to the eyes or vision. Digital screens emit a light called blue light, people associate visual fatigue, dry eyes and itchy eyes with this light, but it is not the light that generates these symptoms, rather when we are looking at a screen we blink less and that generates more fatigue.

If you spend eight hours using your eyes, they will obviously get tired. The eyes do not have pain nerves, but they can manifest this fatigue through itchy eyes or blurred vision at the end of the day.

To avoid these symptoms it is advisable to take breaks and rest.

2. Looking closely is one of the causes of myopia:

It is not known why myopia occurs: Close-up work does not cause an increase in myopia, but it is believed that there are more myopic people in the world because people spend less time outdoors, but this is not proven either. Although it has been shown that tobacco increases myopia.

3. Carrot is good for eyesight:

This story is a myth promoted by the English in World War II. The British began to shoot down German planes, and so that they would not suspect that what had been helping them was the radar, they created a campaign saying that since they were taking a lot of carrots, their vision had improved.

4. Wearing glasses produces dependence on the eyes:

The glasses is a correction method, which produces a better vision. A spectacle does not change the eye nor does it produce dependency. Depending on the quality of the lenses, you will be able to see better or worse, but your vision will not worsen. What’s more, if we use an incorrect graduation we will not cause any disease but we will be incorrectly correcting our visual deficiency. Not much less wearing glasses is a disability.

5. The visual exam is not necessary if I do not have eye problems:

There are many silent diseases that a routine eye exam can detect (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes or hypertension). A routine check-up is recommended every two years for people under 65 years of age and once a year for those over 65.

6. Watching TV from too close will damage your eyes:

It is very common for children to sit very close to the television, but it is not to see better, it is to be more focused on it. It is false that our eyes are damaged as a result.

7. Not everyone will have cataracts in their eyes:

Cataracts are the darkening of the lens (which is the part of the eye that causes the image to be reflected on the retina). The first symptom that our eyes are aging, which will lead to the formation of cataracts, is the need for reading glasses, from the age of 40. So if we live long enough, we will end up with cataracts in our eyes.

8. Wetting drops (artificial tears) can cure dry eyes:

Dry eyes are a chronic condition that causes the tear glands to fail to produce enough tears. Using rewetting drops will make your eyes feel better for a few minutes, but they won’t fix the problem. There are drops that promote tear production but they are only available by prescription.

9. It is possible that contact lenses or lenses reach the brain:

Luckily, this is totally impossible. The inner part of the eyelids has a thin, moist lining called the conjunctiva, and at the back the conjunctiva folds back to cover the sclera, which is the part of the eye that covers the eyeball and gives it that characteristic whiteness. The conjunctiva is continuous
from the eyelids to the eyeball, so it is impossible for any object to pass into the eye, and therefore into the brain.

10. People with refractive surgery can not have a cataract operation:

Refractive surgery is the set of surgical operations used to eliminate refractive defects (myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism). These operations act on the cornea, so someone with refractive surgery can have cataract surgery, since this operation acts on the lens.
